Driving Test Fees Increase
Fees for theory and practical driving tests are increasing on 10 August. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) consulted with organisations within the driving instructor industry and others in March over proposals to increase fees. The main changes are to the fees for:
| Test Type | Current Fee | New Fee |
| Theory Test | £20.50 | £21.00 |
| Car Practical Test | £42.00 | £45.50 |
| Motorcycle Practical Test | £51.00 | £55.00 |
| Lorry and Bus Practical Test | £80.00 | £85.00 |
| Theory test pass certificates supplied to non-DSA examiners | £10.00 | £12.00 |
| Practical Test for driving instructors | £70.00 | £79.00 |
| Trainee Licence for prospective driving instructors | £100.00 | £125.00 |
Fees for tests conducted outside normal working hours and for extended tests will also increase.
DSA's fees have to cover all its costs, as it has no access to general tax revenue. The increases will be used to fund a variety of much-needed improvements, including additional running costs of multi-purpose test centres planned over the next three years, and bringing information technology to all of its test centres. The fees will also fund normal inflation and operating costs.
Fees were last increased in September 2003 for theory tests and in December 2004 for practical driving tests for learner drivers, driving instructor practical tests and theory test pass certificates for non-DSA examiners. The fee for the Trainee Licence was last increased in 1997.
